Brief Summary:

From the reading, I learned that disabilities are much broader than the typical stereotypes. They can be physical, cognitive, mental, and/or sensory. I was also able to realize a new perspective that disabilities are not necessarily a negative thing, and the way our society is shaped is what makes life sometimes more difficult for those with disabilities. Aditionally, I learned that there are different ways to address someone with a disability, and it is important to understand the individuals' preference when speaking to them or about them.

One Takeaway:

Something I took away from this reading was to always approach disability in a neutral and straightforward manner rather than showing emotion.

Real-World Connection:

The reading reminded me of the negative stigma revolving disability. I think that disability should be introduced to children in a way which doesn't make it seem abnormal. It should not be seen as a bad thing.

Burning Question:

What is a respectful way to find out the individuals' preference in the way we talk (person-first vs. identity-first language)?
